Who Should You Follow?

Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and e-mail newsletters are all prime examples of social media that many of us use on a daily basis.  Social media has become an undeniable force you can find anywhere from the workplace to community development groups.  These sources can lead to enrichment through the discovery of groups that are important, interesting, and educational.  Although outlets such as Facebook or Twitter may have been created for other reasons it is not uncommon to find people all across the world coming together for support and to raise awareness for a common interest.

Non-profit groups such as R!KC get to experience the support of patients, clients, and their families and friends all coming together to raise awareness and compassion for those who have experienced a traumatic injury or live with a disability.  Many folks visit our Facebook and Twitter feeds for information on special events, success stories of past patients or even stories of role models that have overcome a traumatic event, educational tidbits, upcoming clinics, prevention tips,  and relevant community events.  Social media can be an inspiring tool but who should you follow? (Besides us of course.) Here is a list to get you started:

Facebook

Falling Forward Foundation - supports patients recovering from catastrophic medical issues. They provide funding that allows patients to continue their rehabilitation, to recover to their fullest potential, and to move forward in their lives.

Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City - Mission is to improve the quality of life for those affected by brain injury.

Greater Kansas City Spinal Cord Injury Association - Provides an opportunity to interact with people in the Greater Kansas City area that have an interest in Spinal Cord injuries.

American Stroke Foundation -  The American Stroke Foundation provides multifaceted services that are dedicated in improving the quality of life of stroke survivors and their caregivers, encompassing many different levels: physical, social, psychological, and economic.

American Stroke Association - The American Stroke Association is a division of the American Heart Association dedicated to prevention diagnosis and treatment to save lives from stroke - America's No. 4 killer and a leading cause of serious disability. The ASA funds scientific research, helps people better understand and avoid stroke, encourages government support, guides healthcare professionals and provides information to enhance the quality of life for stroke survivors.  The AHA and ASA work hand in hand; what's good for the heart is good for the brain.

@NAIDW - Resources for support, guidance, and financial aid to injured and disabled workers and their families.

@ReeveFoundation - Dedicated to curing spinal cord injury by funding innovative research and improving the quality of life for individuals living with paralysis.

@TBICommunity - Including individuals with TBI and family members or friends of those individuals in all aspects of research, training, and education.

Blogs & Online Articles

brainline.org - BrainLine is a national multimedia project offering information and resources about preventing, treating, and living with TBI.  BrainLine includes a series of webcasts, an electronic newsletter, and an extensive outreach campaign in partnership with national organizations concerned about traumatic brain injury.
BrainLine serves anyone whose life has been affected by TBI.  That includes people with brain injury, their families, professionals in the field, an anyone else in a position  to help prevent or ameliorate the toll of TBI.
