5 Reasons To Volunteer This Year

1. Volunteers are the glue of the community
Volunteering isn't all about helping others it can be great for you and your family.  Get involved and you will soon see that you will become more connected to your community.  Let's not forget about all the new friends you will make also whether it be other volunteers or someone you meet through the organization your social life will be active as ever.

2. Volunteering makes you happy
No really, volunteering seriously has a happiness effect.  According to a study in Social Science and Medicine they found that the more time people spent volunteering the happier they were.  Regardless if you want to volunteer monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly your happiness levels can increase up to 16%! Your self esteem will heighten from all the regular contact you will have with other people just like you and the sense of accomplishment you will receive from helping others is unmatched.

3. Volunteering provides many opportunities
Many volunteers have the opportunity to demonstrate their leadership skills in their community which connects them to organizations that will foster the development of the volunteer's skills. Networking is never a bad thing right?  It is not uncommon for a volunteer to meet with a variety of departments in the organization where they are volunteering.

4. Volunteering is for everyone
It doesn't matter how young or old you are volunteering can be a great experience. A volunteer experience may open a door to what you have to offer and you may find new things that are exciting to you.  Volunteering can create a path that leads to future work opportunities The best volunteer experiences start when you are clear about how you want to help in the organization but don't be afraid to try new things!

5. Volunteering shows initiative
Potential employers and colleges like to see your involvement. Volunteering is a great place to gain new skills and step outside your comfort zone.  Volunteering is a learning experience and is a great place to sharpen your skills from how you speak on the phone to the volunteer coordinator to showing up on time for your scheduled volunteer activities.

R!KC has plenty of volunteer opportunities and we love to see new faces.  If you have questions about volunteering or want to get involved with an organization that you are excited about contact Vicki Rancilio vicki.rancilio@rehabkc.org
